Chapter 9

RAPE

Sol called me.

I knew that I would drop everything and go. Something was brewing that couldn't be handled over the phone. Some important event was about to happen! Sol is very psychic, but even Sol wouldn't have been able to guess how bazaar events were about to become.

With the help of my friends I quickly arrived in Abilene at the home of my friend Billie Sol Estes. " What do you need me for Sol," I asked. "Well, there are several item's that I need help with, Fred. First on the list is to work on the movie of my life. We need to get the script ready. Other than that, I have been thinking about a bonding service business. We could get recovering alcoholics bailed out ofjail. Then on top of that, there are a couple of other projects that we can get into."

I got the feeling that Sol actually didn't know what it was he had called me for.

He doesn't always think or act with the logical side of his brain. He is a very psychic man. Sol doesn't always have a good explanation of why he is doing something. He and I are very much in tune. I felt that this was one of those times that we would just have to wait to see exactly what was the real reason that I was there.

I didn't have to wait long

before the explosion of events. Sol was charged with rape. The woman was a Mexican maid that had been brought into this country by lord knows who. The people who had introduced the lady to the Estes family quickly disappeared.

I was late to meet Sol at his daughter, Pam's, real estate office that morning. Everyone was in shock! The Abilene City Police had been there and taken Sol away in handcuffs.

In a few hours arrangements had been made and Sol was once again free on bond. He was mad. "I didn't fuck that bitch, Fred!" he ranted, "If I had fucked her it would be different, I would just go on down to the jail and turn myself in, but I didn't do it." The way Sol was going on I knew that he was telling me the truth.

It turned out that what I knew at the time was proved true.

This was a coverup. Sol had just released to the media, through a grand jury hearing, scandalous allegations about L.B.J. Sol had told how Lyndon had ordered that Marshal fellow killed. It wouldn't be nearly as plausible that Sol was telling the truth if he had just been arrested for rape. According to the newspapers he was an alleged rapist. To the public, this is already a fact. The public ignores the word, 'alleged'. To them Sol had already been convicted. It wasn't hard to see through this once all the facts were considered. His story matched the one that Clyde Foust told me. There were definately people who didn't want Sol to be believed.

Sol knew too much on too many important people.

It looks to me like people with Lyndon's political machine could hire decent help. It looks like they botched this one up as bad as they did the Marshal killing. Somehow Sol had sensed that something was wrong. Sol had called me because I could be trusted. Call it a premonition. It may have been that Sol figured hell would break lose when he started turning state's evidence.

I had arrived back in Abilene with two friends.

One of them stayed to help me help Sol. He was a kind of recovery sponsor for me for my alcohol program. He was a recovering addict and alcoholic like myself. He use to say in the meetings that the problem wasn't drugs and alcohol it was George. That was his name. I've heard in meetings that to stay sober you needed to pick a sponsor that had the qualities you admired.

Actually, he had less sobriety than I did, but I liked George's style. George was young, handsome, smart, and a little aloof in his attitude. He was somewhat enamored of mixing with powerful mafia type people. He was a quick study. George could fit into any situation without much coaching. Little did I realize that the strain of the pressure involved in the circles where I move would be too much strain for George.

For a while George fit right in.

I quipped with Sol about George being my frontman. Sol laughed at the idea. Sol knew, according to the press, I was considered his frontman. It really wasn't the press's fault. They had been fed the lie as a result of the government's sloppy investigation. When I came into my recovery program I was told to get a sponsor. I was told to pick a sponsor and use his advice. A sponsor was someone whose type of sobriety you admired. It is a friend who would help you stay sober. A sponsor will tell you how he did it. If I had known what I know now I might not have picked George. How was I to know that what we were getting into would have affected George so much. I would have never ask him to come along.

As a result of the chain of the events that followed, George blew his sobriety. I felt bad about getting George mixed up in my problems. George ended up back in Austin. Then he disappeared altogether. He grew extremely paranoid about what had happened to Sol. Some of what happened to George I'll never be able to find out. George's reality was all distorted by the drugs. It was hard to tell what was real with George. I didn't know when George was talking or when it was George's drug induced paranoia. He spoke of being captured by government agents. He claimed he had been beaten with rubber hoses. 'They' did not want Sol to have any help. Was George just delusional? It is hard to believe addicts when they are under the influence. George went back to using when he realized the gravity of what was coming down.

The office that we were working out of was in a building that Pam owned. She had used it in the past as a real estate office. There was also a doctor who was sharing the other side of the building. He was some kin to Sol. After you entered the front door you were in the reception area. The doctor used the same reception area as did the oil office that Sol worked for.

George had easy access to the doctors office.

Under the extreme paranoid reality that developed, George went back on drugs. He pilfered the doctors pills. Soon, George was as high as a kite. In view of what went on, it was a wonder that we all didn't take George's route.

I am used to the kind of mess that was coming down so it didn't bother me that bad. It bothered me bad, but not as bad as it did George.

I guess I'd better get on with telling you what happened. Sorry, I didn't mean to just leave you wondering. This commotion happened about 3 days after we got to Abilene. There was really no way that Sol could know, but somehow he had sensed that some heavy events were about to come down.

He had just turned state's evidence against Lyndon.

This Lyndon is the same fellow we already talked about in the other chapters of this book. Sol claimed impunity from prosecution. He had told essentially the same thing to a special grand jury that you will read in Clyde's letter that is in another chapter.

The rape charge was a smoke screen.

I believe the whole mess was contrived by the Johnson people. It was contrived to discredit what Sol was saying. It was what Sol told the grand jury that almost got him framed. They had obviously tried to frame him for raping his house maid. Once again we had conclusive proof that Sol was innocent. The lady he was supposed to have raped showed sperm in the test. This test was made at the rape crisis center. That would have normally been very incriminating evidence. What the people didn't count on was that Sol had a vasectomy about 5 years before this incident.

It was just a little too obvious that the rape charge was a coverup news story.

It was just a little news item designed to blow smoke over the real news article of the day, the reversal of the Marshall killing. Is it not strange that the date on the article announcing the sexual assault charge is the same date that the reversal decision from suicide to murder was announced?

Help came in from everywhere.

Some mafia types showed up. Sol had known these people from his prison days. They were mad about the whole thing. The only thing they wanted to know was where we wanted the lady's body? I had to talk to them because the terms of Sol's parole wouldn't let him mix with these people. If he had, the parole board would have jerked his parole so fast it would have made our heads swim.

I urged that the lady be left alone.

It wouldn't be wise to harm her in any way. It was obvious that she had been set up to do what she did. She was being used by some of Lyndon's people to discredit Sol. Lyndon had long been dead, but his machine was still trying to cover up his misdeeds. They sought to do this any way they could. One guy showed up who had a sailing vessel parked down in the Keys. He was ready to get us out of the country if we needed to go. It was a tempting offer, considering what had happened before. After all, we had all the evidence before of Sol's innocence back in the 1979 trial and he went to prison anyway. We didn't have much faith that something similar wouldn't happen this time.

This whole episode was for one purpose

and one purpose alone. It was to keep Sol's name in disrepute. If Sol ever said anything he wouldn't be believed. Do you think it was just a coincidence that the dates on the two newpaper articles presented here where the same? I don't. The rape publicity was designed to cover up the real story. The third news article that follows here proves this. Was this a set up? Who profited from this? Who set the lady up to do what she did? Why did the lady suddenly disappear before any questions could be ask of her?

By the time I got back to Austin, the guys that I left the paper work with concerning the house that I had leased with the expensive haircut had vanished along with all the legal entanglement papers that secured the deal for me. I was broke and back living in the woods once again.
